My Favorite Non-Toxic Baby Items
It’s especially important to me that my baby items are non-toxic and chemical free. I definitely exhausted my research in this area and have found some awesome items I’ve used for all 3 babies over the last 8 years. Here’s my crunchy mom break down of some of my favorite non-toxic baby items I’ve personally used for my littles:
Organic Crib Mattress - This is crucial, in my opinion, since babies have systems that aren’t fully developed yet so I would never want to overburden their tiny systems with mattress off-gassing. OMI Organic Mattress brand is the brand I purchased, used and passed down for my first two babies. For the third, since we were still using the mattress, I purchased a Brentwood Home crib mattress off Facebook marketplace from a local naturopath who only used it a handful of times for her grandbaby. The Brentwood Home mattress was much more firm that the OMI Organic Mattress but I loved knowing that both were made from completely natural materials.
Organic Cotton Pajamas - Burt’s Bees zip up baby sleepers are my favorite! I also like the t-shirt and shorts/pants sets for toddlers. As a family who has dealt with a lot of eczema, 100% organic cotton is very important to me for their ultra-sensitive skin.
Glass Baby Bottles - I try to avoid plastic as much as possible so this was an important purchase. I am still using the same glass bottles 3 babies later! My babies have all been exclusively breastfed. I have a lot more to share on that in the future! I’ve learned ALL the tips and tricks, so I am always thrilled to share my experience with other nursing mamas. I’ve breastfed for more than 3.5 years combined and still going strong with my third as I write this. I also love these little glass storage jars for my pumped fridge milk.
Non-Toxic Toys - Since babies put absolutely everything in their mouth, I was determined to find some safe alternatives. I’m a big fan of good old fashioned wooden toys so kids can use their imagination but it was important that the finish was non-toxic. These are made in Germany and, as you may know, other countries have way more strict standards than we do. We also have this garden salad pretend play set and still play with it YEARS later and it’s held up really amazing! We also have this wooden sushi set that’s always a favorite when friends come over!
Cloth Diapers - Not only is this amazing for the environment, but it also saves a ton of money and is way better for precious baby bottoms! I used BumGenius brand all-in-ones plus these bamboo charcoal inserts. There used to be a local cloth diaper store by me and they had this pile of disposable diapers on the wall illustrating how much waste goes into landfills. Cloth diapers are actually very easy to clean, especially for breastfed babies! Breastmilk poop is water soluble so it cleans very easily and breaks down with just water. I’ll write more about my experience with cloth diapers in another post. I used these organic cotton flannel baby wipes and made a homemade solution to soak them in.
Natural Diaper Rash Cream - If you use cloth diapers, you have to be careful about what creams you are using so they don’t mess with the absorbency. This is my all time favorite diaper balm and it’s also good for minor cuts and scrapes, which I have also used it for. It cures a diaper rash in no time and is cloth diaper safe.
Natural Baby Wash - I wanted to be sure that I was not starting my babies off using strong, toxic chemical scented baby washes. Although the fragrances smell amazing, most baby products on the market sadly are not very safe. I have used this brand on all of my kids and love their sample pack for diaper bag sized portions. Just think, your skin is your biggest organ and absorbs all the yucky, scary stuff in toxic products.
Zero VOC Nursery Paint - Since traditional paint can off-gas for quite some time, I made sure to research safe brands. I have personally used this in my baby nurseries and also on an old cradle that was refinished for the baby's first month. I always try to paint my nursery at least a few months ahead and have the windows open as much as possible. Typically, my babies have always slept in a cradle in my room for the first month or so anyways. We never knew the gender of any of our babies ahead of time, so I always painted a neutral color and added accents later. We have done a soft gray with pink accents added, pastel green with coral accents added and another gray with a mountain mural decal added.
Bottle Wash - I love Attitude brand and, bonus, it’s EWG certified! I’ve used this bottle wash for years.
Safe Sunscreen - I’m not a big sunscreen user but if I absolutely need some for my babies, hands down this is what I used. I love that it’s unscented and I have also used it on myself! It does go on a little thick and white, but I’ll take that any day over chemicals baking on our skin.
These are just some of my favorites. Let me know if you’re looking for anything specific and, chances are, I have a solid option that I have used before! What are some of your favorite non-toxic baby products?
